My Approach

Finding a new way forward together

I can summarize the help I offer in three words: perspective, insight and solutions.

Everything I do as a psychologist is designed to help you move beyond the limitations of your old ways of looking at things.  We do this by developing a deep psychological understanding of both you and your problems, which opens the door for solutions that may have never occurred to you before:

Perspective

I’ll help you see your struggles in a broader context: what you’re facing now, how it has evolved over time, and how it may play out in the future.  We’ll look at how these difficulties impact you at work, in relationships, and in other aspects of your life.  We’ll examine not only how you react in these contexts, but also how you perpetuate and even shape them.

Insight

My goal isn’t just to give you a different view of the problem.  I want to help you better understand the causes and consequences of your own thoughts, feelings and actions.  But more than that, I’ll help you recognize attitudes, values and beliefs that you may be aware of but you may not fully appreciate, and which are limiting your perspective and inhibiting you from seeing a better way forward.

Solutions

The solutions I provide evolve out of the perspective and insight we develop together.  These are not simply new “strategies” or new “coping mechanisms.”  True solutions integrate who you are—your personality, values and style—into a new approach that will make intuitive sense to you, even though you could not quite see it before.  Because such solutions reflect who you truly are, they have a longer-term impact, and may even touch on areas of your life you did not originally consider.

My Style

My style is warm and supportive, but also straightforward and direct.  I won’t judge, criticize or lecture you, and I’ll always approach your difficulties with honesty, openness and curiosity.  At the same time, in order to help I need to be clear and direct about my ideas and observations. Together, we’ll take a fresh look at your troubles.  I may challenge you at times, but always with a deep respect for both where you are and where you can go.  I’m not a passive therapist who just sits and listens.  My job is to help you, and I’ll be an active partner in understanding and solving your problems.
